Padilla Bay Foundation Late-Fall 2021 Newsletter

November 2021

Here we are in the Holiday season and as a Foundation we are so thankful for YOU, our supporting members, donors, volunteers, and sponsors. And for being able to continue to provide the extra financial support that the Padilla Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve needs to be able to continue its fine efforts for Research, Stewardship, and Education about this important place - Padilla Bay.

Snow Geese over Padilla Bay - Ernie Haydon

Lately we have provided for a Research Scientist studying genetics of eel grass, bought equipment to support the touch pool, and provided honorariums for presentation speakers, for example.

It has been hard these past few months. Our newly hired (in April) Administrative Officer, Amy Wilcox, departed in early September for a full-time position more suited to her needs. While we work to replace her, Board members have again had to jump in and divide up and take on the various tasks - some as simple as checking the e-mail and some more tedious like being sure financial records are correct.

In addition, long time (28 years!) board member Paul Dinnel resigned when his current term ended in September. So much energy and history and experience lost, but still within a phone-call away! Also board member Linda Tyler (Chair for our Communications Committee) resigned when her term ended in September - having taken on much new responsibility in her position with the Port of Skagit. Another lot of experience and talent we will be working to replace!

Contact us if you would like to know more about becoming a board member.

As you are able, the Padilla Bay Foundation encourages you to include us in your will or other Planned Giving activity.

We are preparing a program, “Padilla Bay Legacy Stewards”, with literature and guidance to help.

On the brighter side, Our first student board member, Tica Cardoza, has agreed to become a full time board member and will assist in recruiting a replacement student board member. Tica and fellow board member Brian Brady presented our Student Board Member Program at the recent virtual National Estuarine Research Reserve Association annual meeting to a most appreciative audience!

Have a happy and safe holiday season. Get out and hike the trails and the Interpretive Center is open Wed - Sat 10:00 - 4:00. Get your hand wet in the touch pool. Check out the merchandise - some great gifts there.

The Padilla Bay Foundation’s mission is to provide supplemental funding to support the activities of the Padilla Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve.  Grassroots involvement of our members is the core of the Foundation’s commitment to protecting our estuaries and supporting the Reserve. Members of the Foundation contribute directly to environmental education, stewardship and research at Washington State’s only National Estuarine Research Reserve – one of 29 in the nation. If not already, please consider becoming a member or making a donation to help support our work

Thank You All – the Padilla Bay Foundation Board of Directors
